Psychologists have a master's degree in psychology
A psychologist - as well as the psychological counselor - can offer psychological counselling and help, for example, with conflicts, prevention, decision-making, reorientation, mild blockades, stage fright, build self-confidence, relationship problems, as life and employer counselor.
Psychologists studied at a university psychology - the science of behavior, thinking and feeling - for at least five years. So they are concerned with people's learning and behavior, with their feelings and thoughts. A psychologist can call himself a psychologist if he has completed a master's degree (M.Sc. for short) in psychology. They try to describe, explain, predict or, if necessary, change this. After graduation, they are initially qualified to work e.g. in research, in the human resources departments of companies or in advice centers in the health sector.

Psychotherapists are psychologists with further education
Psychotherapists can help in the same scope as psychologists and psychological counselors. In addition, depending on their specialization, they can treat depression, anxiety, burnout, trauma, severe blockages, sleep disorders, addiction and aggression problems, among others.
If psychologists want to treat patients, they have to add three to five years of additional training to their studies. Only this entitles them to exercise psychotherapy on their own responsibility. After graduation, they acquire a state license (license to practice medicine) and are considered psychological psychotherapists. Unlike medical psychotherapists or psychiatrists, however, they are not allowed to prescribe medication, but work with therapeutic discussions and cognitive methods or give advice.

Psychiatrists studied medicine
Psychiatrists can treat and prescribe medications for depression, anxiety, burnout, trauma, severe blockages, sleep disorders, addiction and aggression problems, among others.
Psychiatrists have graduated from medical school. They mainly dealt with the functioning and diseases of the human body and learned how to treat them with medication, among other things. After studying medicine, there follows several years of specialist training in psychiatry and psychotherapy. After passing the specialist examination, they are considered psychiatrists and can also work as medical psychotherapists. In principle, psychiatrists are not only allowed to have therapeutic discussions. They are also authorized to prescribe medications such as antidepressants, physically examine patients, and arrange for hospital admission.
