Digital media addiction
What is a digital media addiction?
Digital media open up endless possibilities for communication, exchange, information, shopping, gaming, gambling and much more. There are countless channels available to access information, have fun, relax: for example, the Internet, e-mail, computer games, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat. However, digital media also harbor risks and can be addictive if used excessively. Anyone who spends more than 35 hours a week on the Internet outside of work, school or training hours is considered to be addicted to the Internet.
If everything revolves around the "net," this can have a negative impact on social and family relationships as well as on academic or professional performance. An online addiction can also have health consequences such as posture problems, headaches or visual impairments.
Not only the number of hours spent online, but also certain content poses a risk. Digital media content is available at all times and can hardly be controlled. As a result, there is a risk that children and young people in particular will be confronted with topics that are problematic for their healthy and social development, and this applies in particular to porn and violent depictions.
